Denver, CO July 12-15, 2011 The best possible outcome for a developer attending a software conference is to leave feeling inspired and invigorated — anxious to explore new tools & technologies while gaining no more than 10 pounds in cookie-weight. NFJS had assembled an impressive variety of sessions, but I opted to focus on those related to the Groovy ecosystem, plus a few Scala and NoSQL sessions to escape my comfort zone. I’ll further limit my observations below to three Groovy-based tools in particular — Spock, Geb, and Gradle.

I’ve been using Groovy as much as possible on CQ5 projects, mainly for building supplementary tools and running scripts against the content repository (JCR). The underlying Sling framework provides built-in Groovy support, so it’s a simple matter of uploading the latest Groovy jar to your local server (via the Felix console) to tap into the dynamic, functionally-styled, syntactically-sugary goodness of Groovy on your CQ5 instance.

Great news for anyone utilizing Amazon’s Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) service to host websites. Amazon Web Services has released an update for their DNS service, Route 53, that allows clients to alias their ELB to a zone file.

VMware and The Cloud Developer’s Bill of Rights

VMware has released what is calls the Cloud Developer’s Bill of “Rights”* to build a differentiating marketing theme for its new cloud offering, Cloud Foundry. A more transparent name for the site would be “The case for platform-as-a-server (PaaS) and why VMware should control its future.” This is in contrast to infrastructure-as-a-server (IaaS) which a competing platform such as Amazon Web Services, Joyent or Rackspace would provide or other closed-source PaaS offerings such as Google App engine or Microsoft Azure.
Red Hat Honors Old SKUs for Renewals through 5/31/11

After much anticipation, we have official word from Red Hat that we can process RHEL renewal orders at the old subscription model until 5/31/11. (All JBoss orders must be with the new model, as that cutoff date was 12/31/10.) I am working with as many of my customers as possible to ensure they have the option to renew before the cutoff, or at least have a budgetary quote in place. Starting June 1st, all Red Hat Enterprise Linux orders must be processed with the new model. Therefore, I strongly recommend that if you have any questions, or are in need of information about how the pricing affects your organization, you contact me as soon as possible.

Red Hat changes subscription model

WCF 4 JSON REST Service

For the last several months I have been lucky enough to work on several projects that have exposed me to the jQuery platform. I have used jQuery with ASP .NET MVC as well as with Phonegap, lately I have been making use of the AJAX calls within a distributed application. While developing the JSON based REST Services I have learned that Fiddler can be your best friend when debugging services. In the following examples I will show a WCF Rest Service and how to call it from jQuery, Fiddler and ASP.NET MVC.

I’m really starting to believe that having access to Amazon’s Cloud services (or really any cloud platform) is a must-have for practically any enterprise development project. I’m not talking about running the final product on AWS or even the development environment on AWS, though we do that often enough. Instead, I am talking about using AWS services as a tool to assist in tasks that are common in many enterprise development projects.
